A discussão sobre os desafios do chamado big and broad social data vem levantando importantes questões teórico-metodológicos para o campo das ciências sociais. Se durante décadas os cientistas sociais puderam reivindicar, não sem tensões, sua expertise específica na construção de dados confiáveis sobre a vida social em especial as entrevistas em profundidade e os surveys , agora, a emergência de imensos bancos de dados com informações cruciais sobre determinados processos sociais, criados e controlados por grandes corporações privadas ou organizações públicas, poderá implicar um forte deslocamento nas formas habituais de pesquisa sociológica. O que estamos pretendendo sugerir é que a cientometria, campo inter outransdisciplinar que possui afinidades evidentes com certas áreas das ciências sociais, ao interagir com as últimas, pode e deve produzir irritações produtivas nos modos pelosquais sociólogos, antropólogos e cientistas políticos observam e avaliam sua produção científica. Por outro lado, para que esse processo possa ser uma via de mão dupla, é fundamental que as ciências sociais também possam produzir ressonâncias nas formas pelas quais a ciência tem sido observada por meio dessas novas metodologias informacionais. Daí a proposta de uma sociologia das comunicações científicas, inspirada no trabalho pioneiro de Loet Leydesdorff, orientada simultaneamente para a análise das dinâmicas de comunicação no interior do sistema científico envolvendo tanto o universo próprio criado pelas ciências sociais quanto suas conexões com outros campos do conhecimento e para os impactos (entendidos em sentido amplo) das ciências sociais nas formas pelas quais a sociedade se auto-observa e reflete publicamente sobre seus problemas. A consecução dessa proposta envolve o uso e o tratamento de uma grande quantidade de dados, inserindo-a no campo emergente e de fronteira denominado de humanidades digitais.
