This chapter investigates the rise of the far right in Brazil—locally called bolsonarismo, as it is centred around former president Jair Bolsonaro—and its intricate connection with militarized managerialism, a paradigm of state government that mixes militarized urbanism and New Public Management. The author’s research at Rio de Janeiro’s Integrated Command and Control Centre provides illuminating insights into the government’s strategies regarding public security and also state governmentality. Moreover, the chapter explores the ramifications of the 2018 Federal Intervention in Rio de Janeiro, unravelling its implications in the wider context of the rise of the far right in Brazil and highlighting the significant role played by militarized managerialism in this process.
